But leading Wiltshire event rider David Doel is very...

The life of Toby Balding, a leading member of one of British horse racing’s outstanding families, will be marked at a memorial service at Marlborough College on December 15.
Toby Balding, who died last month aged 78, trained two Grand National winners, two Champion Hurdle winners and a winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Born in the United States and having started schooling there, he and his brother Ian were sent to Marlborough College.
Apart from his many training successes - mainly over the jumps but also on the flat - Toby Balding was known as the mentor of young jockeys – most notably AP McCoy and Adrian Maguire.
Toby Balding’s father was a successful trainer. His brother Ian trained Mill Reef amongst many other successful horses and retired in 2002. His nephew Andrew took over Ian’s Park House Stables at Kingsclere near Newbury. Toby Balding’s niece is the racing commentator and journalist Clare Balding.
The main event at the Boekelo International Horse Trials in the Netherlands (October 9-12) was the final round of this year’s International Federation Eventing Nations Cup series.
The final competition was won by the New Zealand team who finished just 1.6 penalty points ahead of the British team. The New Zealanders were without Sir Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson – but were with Mildenhall-based Tim Price on Bango.
The British team suffered some bad luck when Laura Collett on her new horse Grand manoeuvre came third overall in the dressage. And after the dressage the British bteam led, but the cross country saw some re-arrangement of the leader board and some ropped penalties. Laura, who is now based at Lambourn, was riding with four broken metatarsals in a foot after a fall last month.
After nine events through the season, the German team became Nations Cup competition series champions. Great Britain came second four points behind.
If you have a horse – or know of a horse – with an interesting story you can nominate him or her for our HORSE OF THE MONTH feature. Race horse, eventing horse, point to point horse, personal horse or working cart horse…
All we need is a good ‘back story’ and a good photograph – if possible an action photograph. Or if it’s too early for a ‘back story’ making a good case for their future prospects will be fine – if challenging!
