Salisbury’s last meeting of the season abandoned after overnight rain
Racing at Salisbury today (Monday, October 13) has been abandoned after heavy overnight rain on a course that was already giving concern.
A course inspection at 7.15am was hardly needed after 12mm of rain fell during Sunday night and another 10mm was predicted to fall on Monday.
Although some of the fields were going to be small for this meeting, there were some notable entries on the card.
The racecourse management will be looking back ruefully to October 2004 when a two day meeting had to be abandoned due to rain.
But that was much more damaging for the racecourse as the meeting included four important races transferred from Ascot during the Berkshire track’s temporary closure – and was due to be televised by the BBC.
That decision ten years ago came after just four millimetres of rain fell before the Friday meeting.
