Altior to lead parade of Henderson's Cheltenham champions at Newbury's jumps season finale

Altior (Photo: Newbury racecourse)Altior (Photo: Newbury racecourse)Altior, Beware the Bear and Pentland Hills, Nicky Henderson’s heroes from last week’s Cheltenham Festival, will parade at Newbury, when the track hosts its last jumps fixture of the 2018-19 season (Saturday, March 23).

Racegoers will have the chance to salute the locally trained Lambourn trio when they make an appearance in the parade ring before racing at 1.30pm.

Altior underlined his status as one of the superstars of jumping when he took his unbeaten record over jumps to 18 by securing a second success in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

He will share the limelight with two stablemates new to the big race winning arena: Pentland Hills, winner of the Triumph Hurdle, and Beware The Bear, who captured the Ultima Handicap Chase.

Nicky Henderson is also set to take the leading trainer title at the Berkshire track having saddled eight winners going into the final fixture.

The rider of more than 1,300 winners in Britain, whose successes include two Champion Hurdles, a Champion Chase and two King George VI Chases, will sign autographs before racing at 1.10pm outside the Weighing Room.

Fehily, who is 43, has threerides on the eight race card: Prabeni in the Be Wiser Insurance Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (2.40), Outofthisworld in the Grade 2 EBF and TBA Mares’ National Hunt Series Final - the day’s feature race (3.15), and Get In The Queue in the Goffs UK Spring Sale Bumper (5.00).

There will be a special presentation to the jockey ahead of his final mount on the day, which will be attended by many of his family, friends and supporters.

The EBF and TBA Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Series Final has attracted a field of 16 which is headed by the Lucy Wadham-trained The White Mouse, winner of two of her three starts over hurdles.

Last year the £40,000 prize was won by Roksana, who claimed the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last week. Her trainer Dan Skelton saddles two challenges, Etamine Du Cochet and So Lonely.

The racecourse will also celebrate the leading stars of their jump season with their own end of season awards, The Newburys in association with Conundrum Consulting, which will be awarded throughout the afternoon.  As well as Nicky Henderson taking the trainers’ crown, J P McManus heads the leading owner category with the leading jockey, conditional rider and leading yard for best turned out winners too close to call entering the last day.

Finally, over the last week, the public have had their chance to vote of their Moment of the Season from a shortlist of six.  With over 1000 votes, the award will go to connections of Carole’s Destrier - following his win in the Veteran’s Handicap Chase on March 2.  Once again, the 11-year-old demonstrated his love for Newbury - delighting trainer Neil Mullholland and owner Carole Skipworth.
