Chafer grubs: Salisbury Racecourse forced to abandon racing
Salisbury Racecourse's 'Twilight' meeting today (Tuesday, September 11) has been abandoned. The decision was made on safety ground.
Overnight loose turf has appeared on the loop section of the course "...believed to be as a consequence of chafer grub damage."
Their first race was due to go off at 3.30pm with the last race at 7.10pm.
All the unused food brought in for racegoers - including 200 sandwiches - has been given to Salisbury's Alabare charity which supports homeless and vulnerable individuals.
On Monday Epsom Racecourse had to cancel its Thursday meeting as an infestation of chafer grubs had made parts of the course unsafe.
