Burghley success for Pippa Funnell

Sixteen years since she won her last Burghley, Pippa Funnell is back in big time with a win on MGH Grafton Street on the horse’s debut appearance at five star.
The narrowest of margins split the top three with Badminton winner Piggy French second on her feisty mare Vanir Kamira, on 30.9; Pippa having won on 30.8. Less than one point behind in third was Oliver Townened on Ballahgmor Class on 31.3. It was a nail biting finale all three horses had one fence down.
“I wasn’t really nervous as  he is an amazing horse; to come to Burghley for your five star and win it...he is very special,” said Pippa.
Marlborough based New Zealander Tim Price, who won the competition last year, was fifth on Bango, having climbed the leader board from 11th place after dressage.
“It was a lovely round and I’m really pleased for the horse as it’s finally feeling lived everything is starting to come together for him - he’s not always been the easiest,” said Tim.
But it was disappointing weekend for the couple with the rest of their string as Jonelle had to withdraw after the dressage with Faerie Dianimo, where she was in a competitive position in seventh place. Tim’s mount Ringwood Sky Boy was uncharacteristically eliminated during the cross country and  he retired Xavier Fare on the course.
